Since the film’s release, both Lilly and Lana Wachowski have come out as transgender, so it's likely they infused their own experiences into The MatrixBill and Ted Face the MusicThe Matrix 4.
It’s evident that this allegory was held tight to the chest for Lilly and Lana Wachowski. The political and social climate in 1999 was undeniably different and much less accepting than it is currently in 2020. Though the current society still contains prevalent transgender inequality, there is a more accepting space for conversations about gender identity now than when the film was released. Being that the lead actor was not aware of the true interpretation of the film shows that the creators wanted this to resonate with their audiences as they consumed it. Confirming the meaning behind The Matrixwhen it released would have impacted its reception and the film may not have even gotten the chance to be created. The Wachowskis creatively spoke to their intended audiences in a restricted space and Reeves certainly seems grateful to be apart of this.
